Petzl Tikka Headtorch Review: for Feeding Horses in the Dark

Feeding horses in pitch black conditions is a routine part of yard life, particularly during winter mornings and late-night checks. A dependable headtorch is essential for working safely and efficiently. After using several options over time, the Petzl Tikka headtorch has proven to be a consistently reliable choice for everyday yard duties. Headtorch for horse feeding

While it is marketed primarily as a running and outdoor headtorch, it performs particularly well in an equestrian setting. For tasks such as horse feeding, mucking out, and moving around the yard in low light, it has become one of the most useful pieces of equipment I use. It's currently £34.50 on Amazon here but I paid around £20, over 8 years ago and there's no signs of my light giving up at all! Think of it as a piece of kit that will last you years for loads of uses, dog walking in winter, running in the dark; it's got tonnes of uses.

Light Output and Brightness Settings

The Petzl Tikka headtorch offers three brightness settings, allowing you to adjust the light depending on the task.

  • The lowest setting is suitable for close work such as preparing feed or checking water

  • The mid-level setting works well for walking around the yard

  • The highest setting provides enough illumination for navigating fields or checking horses in complete darkness

This range of options makes it easy to use appropriate lighting without startling horses, while still giving you enough light to see well.

Adjustable Beam Angle

A practical feature for yard work is the tilting light unit, which allows the beam to be angled up or down. Once set, it stays in position.

This is particularly useful when your hands are occupied, as the light can be directed exactly where it’s needed without repeated adjustment. It's also easy to handle with gloves on.

Comfort During Extended Use

Comfort matters when a headtorch is worn for prolonged periods. The Petzl Tikka has a soft, elasticated headband that is fully adjustable and sits securely without causing pressure or discomfort.

It is lightweight and unobtrusive, making it suitable for longer sessions on the yard without becoming irritating or distracting.

Stability and Fit

Stability is another strong point. Once adjusted, the headtorch remains secure and stable, even when bending, lifting, or moving between stables.

It does not slip or bounce during normal yard activities, which makes it easier to focus on the task at hand rather than on having to keep adjusting the torch.

Battery Type and Battery Life

The Petzl Tikka is powered by AAA batteries rather than USB charging. It has a batter indicator so you know it's got power and when it's time to change the batteries.

Battery life is strong, with infrequent changes required even with regular use. AAA batteries are also easy to keep as spares in a tack room, feed room, or in your car, reducing the risk of being caught out without power.

Limitations to Consider

The main limitation is the lack of USB recharging. However, given the batteries last a long time, have a battery life indicator and that they are easy to replace, this is a minor issue rather than a significant drawback for me.

Suitability for Horse Owners

Although designed with runners in mind, the Petzl Tikka headtorch is well suited to use on a horse yard. It provides reliable light, a comfortable fit, and practical features that translate well to daily horse care tasks.

Overall Assessment

For anyone looking for a headtorch for horse feeding, winter yard work, or low-light stable duties, the Petzl Tikka headtorch is a solid and dependable option. It prioritises functionality, comfort, and reliability without unnecessary complexity.

It has earned a permanent place in my yard kit and continues to perform well in real-world conditions.
