The Best Clip-on Solar Light for Horse Hay or Field Duties

The Best Clip-On Solar Light for Horse Yard Duties

Real-life testing in the dark, mud and chaos of the yard

If you’re juggling horses, dogs, gates and wheelbarrows in the dark, a reliable clip-on light can make yard life feel safer, calmer and a lot less stressful. In this review, I share how this clip-on solar light performed in real, muddy, late-night conditions.

Quick Summary

  • Type: Rechargeable clip-on, solar powered, LED light
  • Best For: Yard jobs, field checks, putting hay out
  • Brightness: Enough to light a good 5-10 metres in a wide area

Why I Wanted a Clip-On Solar Powered Light

Carrying a torch while leading horses, pushing a wheelbarrow or dealing with gates just isn’t practical. I wanted something hands-free that I could clip to my coat, fence or gate and forget about, but that still gave me plenty of light to work safely.

I use this light specifically for evening hay feeding, when visibility matters for:

  • Seeing where I’m putting hay piles

  • Avoiding super wet and muddy ground

  • Keeping an eye on multiple ponies at once

  • Feeling safe and confident in the field after dark

Unlike a handheld torch, this light provides a wide, even spread of bright white light that illuminates a large area at once. It doesn’t just light up one small patch,  it makes the whole feeding area visible, which makes a huge difference when you’re carrying hay or moving between ponies. It has a really wide clamp clip meaning I can attach it to the gate, to a fence, to a coat or to a tree branch. Once it’s in place, it simply does its job. Watch this demo reel on my Instagram page to see it in action.

Brightness & Beam

The beam is wide enough for close-up yard tasks like filling haynets, checking rugs and walking between stables. It’s not a “light up the whole field” torch, but for jobs within 5-10 metres it does exactly what it needs to.

The motion sensor is sensitive without being annoying. As soon as I approach the feeding area, the light comes on automatically, no fumbling with switches, no trying to balance a torch while carrying hay.

For yard and field use, this is exactly what you want:

  • Hands-free lighting

  • Immediate visibility

  • No wasted battery from being left on accidentally

It feels well suited to real, practical pony care rather than being a trend on social media.

Battery Life

On mixed use across an evening of yard jobs and stable jobs, the battery comfortably lasted several outings of 40 minutes at a time, before needing a recharge. Being able to plug it in rather than replace batteries is a big plus.

This light has been used outdoors in typical UK conditions — damp evenings, cold air, and general field exposure — and it’s held up well so far. Knowing it’s waterproof gives real peace of mind when you’re relying on it daily, not just occasionally. It's solar powered so you can charge it in daylight but it also has a USB charging port, using C-class charging. I think I've charged it a couple of times and the light has never cut out in use. It's a must have item for me.

Comfort & Clip Strength

The clip feels secure on a wide range of surfaces. I could clip it to thick wooden fence posts, post a rail, tree branches, metal gates, stable doors and even brick! It's a really wide clamp.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Hands-free light for yard jobs
  • Rechargeable battery AND solar powered
  • Secure clip on a massive range of uses
  • Lightweight and easy to use

Cons

  • It's a little more bulky than some other options
  • The motion sensor dips when you are around 3 metres away which can be a little annoying but it isn't a deal breaker

Final Verdict

For evening field duties, this is hands down the best light source I’ve used for feeding my pony and her companions. It’s bright, reliable, practical, and genuinely makes dark-evening care easier and safer.

It’s now a permanent part of my setup and I'd be lost without it.
